9.
Trim the inside or top edge of the design to ¼ inch, clipping corners as needed. Do not clip too closely to the edge. You need this as a seam allowance in a later step.
10.
Turn the design right side out. Use a point turner on the points, if needed, to keep them sharp.
11.
Press the design flat using a dry iron. If you need to clip an area or push the points out further, do so now and re-press it.
12.
Spray the edge lightly with spray starch. Do not over saturate the fabric with the starch.
13.
Press the design until it is completely dry.
14.
Repeat steps 12 and 13 twice more.
15.
Gently pull the design open. If it doesn’t pull apart easily, repeat steps 12 and 13 again.
16.
Lay the item to be hemmed on your work surface wrong side up.
17.
Lay the design onto your item wrong side up and pin the bottom of the pieces together. Yes, this is both pieces wrong side up. This is very important.
18.
Stitch a straight hem.
19.
Turn and press the piece. You will now have right sides up.
20.
Pin the hem in place.
21.
Stitch down the hem top using a pin stitch with the “teeth” biting into the Madeira appliqué design and the straight part of the stitch running along the edge of the design. Alternatively you can use a small zigzag to hold down the appliqué and follow up with a reinforced straight stitch along the edge of the design. This is your apron body.
22.
Hem the sides of the apron.
23.
Run a gathering stitch along the top of the apron body - this is the remaining raw edge.
24.
Attach the apron body to the 21 inch piece leaving ½ inch on each side to attach the sash pieces and using a ½ inch seam.
25.
Sew the sashes right sides together using a ½ in seam and turn right side out.
26.
Sew the sashes to each side of the apron front piece.
27.
Fold the “hem” part of the front over the sashes and pin in place.
28.
Stitch the hem of the apron with a straight stitch.
