Directions for Scallop Hem
1.
Cut the white linen into a piece measuring 18 x 27 inches (larger if you wish).
2.
Hem three sides of the towel. The unfinished side will be the towel front.
3.
Fold the colored piece in half creating a piece that is 5 x 11 inches.
4.
Using a blue wash-away marker, draw the design from the templates the top edge of one-half of your hemming material.
5.
Open the piece up and draw the scallops all the way across the bottom of the colored piece. Keep the scallops even with each other.
6.
Place wash-away basting thread in the bobbin and lightweight thread in the top of your sewing machine.
7.
Using a very small stitch (L=1.5) stitch along the marked line (see photo). This will be on one side only. This will seem weird, but it is correct.
8.
Take the wash-away basting thread out of the bobbin. This step is very important. You do not want to finish your project with wash-away thread – trust me on this one!
9.
Trim the top edge of the design to ¼ inch, clipping corners as needed. Do not clip too closely to the edge. You need this as a seam allowance in a later step (see photo).
10.
Turn the design right side out. Use a point turner on the points if needed to keep them sharp.
