Strawberry Placemat

March brings thoughts of warmer weather. Make these placemats for al fresco meals in the warmer days ahead. The hem treatment using a satin stitch makes these quick and easy. You can order a kit that includes the embroidery design.

Supplies
·
3/8 yard linen
·
1 piece 8 x 8 inch tear away stabilizer
·
Design  “Fresh Strawberries
·
Size 75 universal needle
·
White 60 weight thread
·
30 weight rayon embroidery for the embroidery
Cutting
Cut the linen 19 x 14 inches by pulling threads on the cutting lines to keep the grain straight.
Embroidery
Embroider the design in the center of the placemat using the stabilizer. If you do not have an embroidery machine, you may embroider a monogram by hand or add an applique to the center front of the piece.
Instructions
1.
Fold and press a 1 inch hem on all four sides.
2.
Sew the hems down with a straight stitch about 1/8 inch from the edges. Keep your stitching straight as it will be the line you follow to sew your satin stitch.
3.
Set up your sewing machine for a satin stitch (L=0.8,W=6.0). This can be an actual satin stitch or a tight zigzag stitch. You may want to practice turning corners as described in step 4 and 5, on a piece of scrap linen.
4.
With a thread that contrasts the fabric (red was used on the cover placemat) stitch around all four sides. Start in the middle of a side.
5.
When you get to a corner, stop with the needle to the inside. Lift the needle and align it so the zigzag will end evenly with the previous row.
