You may want to practice turning corners as described in step 6 and 7, on a piece of scrap linen.

With a thread that contrasts the fabric (blue was used on the sample placemat but orange would look just as nice) stitch around all four sides. Start in the middle of a side, not at a corner.
7.
When you get to a corner, stop with the needle to the inside.
8.
Lift the needle and align it so the satin stitch will end evenly with the previous row. Continue all the way around.
9.
When you get to your starting point, overlap the previous stitching by 4-5 stitches.
