20.
Turn the fabric right side out, making sure to square the corners. |
21.
Lightly spray each piece with spray starch and iron it dry. |

Do this two more times. This starching will do two things. It will dissolve the wash- |

You should be able to gently tug at the seam and pull it away. This will create a 6 inch hole in the center of each square with ½ inch seam allowances. |
24.
Fold the 9 x 1 ½ inch strips in half lengthwise creating eight 9 x ¾ inch strips. |
25.
Lay four of these strips around the inside of each square, matching the seam allowances. Pin in place. There will be ¼ inch showing in the center of the square. |

Lay one white linen piece onto a work space. |

Lay one 15 x 15 inch piece over it, centering the design. Pin the two pieces together. |
28.
Stitch through all layers around the fabric square. Stitch as close to the center folds of the tartan as you can without stitching onto the red strip. Square up the piece if needed. |
29.
Repeat steps 14 – 19 for the other tartan square. |
30.
Fold the 15 x 1 ¾ inch pieces in half lengthwise creating 8 pieces 15 x 7/8 inches. Finger press the fold. |
31.
Pin two of these strips to the top and bottomof each square keeping the raw edges together. |
32.
Stitch a straight seam down each side using the fold line as a guide. |
33.
Lay the batting strips centered over the seam line you just created leaving ½ inch open on each end of the strip. |
34.
Fold the raw edges together and pin in place. |
35.
Repeat these steps for the side strips. The end of the strip should match the raw edge of the top and bottom strips. Set these pieces aside. |
36.
On the wrong side of one 15 inch side of each of the 15 x 10 ½ inch pieces, iron on a 15 x 1 inch strip of interfacing. |
37.
Finish the outside of each interfaced edge by folding it over ¼ inch or by serging the edge. |
38.
Fold over and press the interfacing to the wrong side creating a piece that is 9 ½ by 15 inches. |
39.
For this step, there will be a 1 ½ inch overlap on each side for the buttons and button holes. On one side, add three button holes. On the other, attach 3 buttons, keeping the plaids matched. S |
